NSCN-IM cadre held in Mizoram

LONGDING: In a major breakthrough, based on a specific intelligence input, the Longding Battalion of Assam Rifles along with the Longding police apprehended two hardcore insurgents of NSCN-IM from Nokjan- Zedua village near here on Saturday. The team also recovered a pistol and ammunition.

During initial interrogation, the insurgents confessed that they had come to threaten the market committee of Longding town to pay extortion amount at the earliest or face dire consequences.

In yet another incident on Friday, the team apprehended an overground worker in possession of Rs 4.70 lakh of extortion money from Pongchao village of the Longding district.

The overground worker confessed that the illegally collected extortion money was meant to be delivered to NSCN K-YA insurgent, self-styled brigadier Somchai Konyak, located in Myanmar.

The apprehensions and the seizure of the extortion money is a major setback to the underground groups operating in the Longding district. The apprehended trio, along with the seized items, has been handed over to the police.
